Muncie Students Need Our Help

The start of a new school year is ripe with fresh opportunities and new possibilities. There’s something inspiring about a brand new notebook, new package of pencils, new clothes, and a new opportunity to learn and grow. But for many students in our city the school year starts with more of the same–last year’s clothes, last year’s stress, last year’s defeat.

The current financial crisis is especially felt in the community surrounding Dialogue Church. The five closest elementary and middle schools have an average of 79% of their student population on free and reduced lunches, and this figure climbs as high as 89% at one of the schools. Back-to-School time places an even greater financial burden on the parents and grandparents of these school-aged children.

Dialogue wants to stand together with our community in the fight against poverty. On August 4th and 5th, Dialogue is sponsoring a Rummage Sale with ALL proceeds used to purchase Jeans for Delaware County students.

We Need Your Help

Together, we will provide something that money can’t buy. We will be giving students self-confidence and pride on the first day of school. We will allow hard-working moms and dads the peace of mind knowing that their child’s needs are being met. We will demonstrate to families struggling in hard economic times that there’s still hope, and that our community is willing to stand beside them in a time of need.

Two Ways You Can Help

We love the opportunity to work with like minded individuals in our community.  Whether you consider yourself a “church person” or not is irrelevant–this isn’t about conversions or indoctrination. Our goal is to display love and grace and we believe that everyone can get in on that.  There are a couple of ways your family can participate:

  1. Donate Time and Items
Our preference is that your family joins ours on the day of the sale. Bring your items, set up a table, and interact with the community. Dialogue has the space, tables, and advertising all ready to go. After the sale, we will be hosting a Block Party and using ALL PROCEEDS to purchase jeans (all administrative costs will be covered by Dialogue Church). For more information on the Block Party, click here.
  2. Donate Items
If you can’t make it to the sale, contact us and we’ll arrange a time for you to drop-off your items, or a time that we can come and pick them up. Again, all proceeds will be used to purchase jeans.

FAQ

  1. Do I have to be a religious person to help out?
Not at all. We believe that everyone is on a spiritual journey and that generosity is good for us all. We invite everyone, regardless of race, color, creed, sexual orientation, or anything else to join us on our journey.
  2. Can I get a tax deduction for donating items?
Yes you can. If you give us the total value of your donation, we will write you a receipt to use for tax purposes. Dialogue Church is licensed by the state of Indiana as a non-profit organization.
  3. How many jeans are we giving away?
We will give away at least 100 pairs. But with your help, we could do even more!
  4. How will the Rummage Sale work?
This year we are trying something new. Instead of pricing every item with our best guess of value, we are going to let shoppers name their own price. If the price seems fair, we’ll sell it. The goal is to spread generosity and grace in our community. Raising money is secondary. If you have an item that you wouldn’t want to be sold under a certain amount, we will be happy to oblige.
  5. Where is the Rummage Sale?
Dialogue meets at what is now Forest Park Senior Center (formerly Forest Park Elementary). The campus is located at  2517 W 8th St. Muncie, IN 47302.
  6. When would I have to be there? When is the Rummage Sale?
The Rummage is from 8am-2pm Saturday and from 11am – 1pm on Sunday.
You can come for the whole thing, or whenever your schedule allows. We’ll all work together to get the job done. If you can, make sure to stay for the Block Party from 2-4pm Sunday!
  7. What happens to the leftover items after the sale?
(This is our favorite part.) From 2pm-4pm Sunday, Aug. 5th Dialogue will host a “Summer Beach Block Party”. At the party there will be free games, free food, and drawings will be held for the Jeans Giveaway. Anything left over from the Rummage will be FREE to the community!
  8. What if I have an item that I want back if it doesn’t sell?
No problem. Let us know and we’ll save it for you. Or, better yet, join us and you can set it back yourself!
  9. When do you need to know if my family can help?
The deadline is Thursday, Aug. 2nd.
